you prospectors talk about this story please

Walking along a path taken by thousands of others at the Crater of Diamonds State Park, Nicole Ruhter noticed something everyone else had missed a tea-colored, 2.93-carat diamond.
Ruhter, 13, of Butler, Mo., said she would name her find the "Pathfinder Diamond" after pulling what she described as a broken pyramid from the ground. Her parents, grandparents, brother and two sisters had already spent the day digging in two other fields before heading down the path just after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
"We were walking through the path and I just walked and saw this little shine," said Ruhter, who has just finished the seventh-grade. "We wrapped it up in a little dollar bill and took it back and showed them."
Ruhter said both park rangers and her vacationing family got excited about the diamond, found along a service road. So far this year, visitors to the park have found 332 diamonds, three of them Tuesday alone, said Bill Henderson, assistant park superintendent.
While the park does not do appraisals, Henderson said experts appraised a 4-carat diamond found previously in the park between $15,000 to $60,000. Henderson said Ruhter's diamond did have chips and several imperfections.
"It's a nice diamond," he said. "It looked like it had been broken off at one side."
For now, Ruhter and her family said they'd keep the diamond for a time and find out how much it is worth before attempting to sell it.
"I was kind of praying to God. I was saying, 'I don't care if it's worth whatever it's worth, I don't care if it's a tiny little sliver of something, I just want something,'" Ruhter said. "Ten minutes later, I just found it."
Crater of Diamonds State Park is the world's only diamond-producing site open to the public and visitors are allowed to keep the gems they find. On average, two diamonds are found each day at the park.
The largest of the 25,000 diamonds found since the state park was established in 1972 was the 16.37-carat Amarillo Starlight, a white diamond found by a visitor from Texas in 1975.

Thanks for posting this, Anty Ep. Would be nice to have that park in my area, so I could test my luck. They have recently found a new diamond area with some nice stones about 15 miles ne of Wawa Ontario which is about an 8-9 hours drive away. A kimberlite pipe without significant diamonds was found sw of me across Lake Michigan just west of Racine Wisconsin a few years ago. About a score without diamonds were found in the Crystal Falls area of the UP in the 80's.

Thanks for the posting; I appreciate it. I've been a gold prospector and weekend miner for nearly 40 years and always keep my eyes open for gemstones. Have never been to Arkansas but grandma has been after me for nearly a year to go halfway across the country and spend some time at that park. Seems to have something to do with her and diamonds but I can't imagine what it might be!

That old-timer sounds like old "Diamond Jim". He use to frequent the park nearly every day, and had a pretty good poke full of small diamonds from his years of hunting. That latest find doesn't sound like very good quality though from the color and imperfections. If ya want to see a nice one from the park, Google the "Kahn Diamond", set in a ring by former Hot Springs jeweler Stan Kahn and later worn to both of Bill's Presidential inagurations by Hillary. It's an awesome uncut canary yellow stone that is nearly flawless. Second photo shows old Jim in the center photo with the blue shirt.

diamonds are found on the eastern shores of lake michigan in the sand from time to time, according to an article I read last year in LAKE magazine, which is a free magazine they pass out along the shore from Chicago down and then around all the way up to Mackinac. The story mentioned one found by a little girl oddly enough.

Once my 5 year old girl found some cash at night walking back to the car from a college football game. She bent down and picked up two twenties somebody had dropped in a pile of autumn leaves. It was well after sunset and I have no clue how she even saw them. I took them into custody "for safekeeping" and my irritating mother in law immediately began suggesting that I do thus and such with them. I growled at her and she backed off. My little girl was fantastically proud of herself and rightly so.

Just yesterday I came home with $2.10 in change, and two new good tennis balls for my dog to chew on after a 2 hour bike ride on the park trails. :bear_tongue: What Luck.
